July 2006 - Bob Ritger's Trip to Kleinwallstadt, GermanyPhotos from my trip to Kleinwallstadt to meet my relatives and see the town where my ancestors lived. Kleinwallstadt is a small town located on the river Main just south of Aschaffenburg in the Spessart region of Bavaria, Germany. I spent 6 fantastic days there in July of 2006 with many memorable moments, images and experiences.

#9 Amtsgasse Door - Franz Anton Rittger's House161 viewsEntry door to #9 Amtsgasse - Franz Anton Rittger's House. Above the door in chalk is "20 * C * M * B * 06" which is an indication that the home was visited in January, 2006 by the three kings - C = Caspar, M = Melchior, B = Balthasar.

Rathaus126 viewsI visited the Rathaus with my cousin Herbert. We were lucky to visit it on the one day of the week which it was open in the summer. We were even luckier as the town treasurer was in his office - Helmuth Rittger. Helmuth gave me a number of gifts including a history book of Kleinwallstadt, a ceramic plaque and plate and a bag full of information about the town and the surrounding area.

Castle Excavation140 viewsOn the Plattenberg on a hilltop this excavation is underway to uncover the ruins of a small castle. Only a small portion of the castle has been uncovered but there are some speculative sketches of what it may have looked like. The location seemed odd to me as it was not at the highest peak in the area nor did it command a strategic location. The ruins date from the mid 1200's. The casle was built mostly of red sandstone - much of which was likely pilfered to make the homes and foundations of buildings in Kleinwallstadt.Jul 29, 2006

Bahnhof125 viewsThe train station at Kleinwallstadt appears to have been converted to apartments. It has been surmised that with the automation of ticket vending the station may no longer have been necessary. The train from Aschaffenburg stops here.Jul 29, 2006

Neuer Friedhof Kleinwallstadt155 viewsNew cemetery in Kleinwallstadt. Many Rittger's and other descendants of Christmann Rittger are buried in this cemetery. I visited this site four times on my trip and was amazed at the attention and care that is given to the upkeep of each grave. Relatives regularly visit the graves to water the flowers, trim the foliage and keep things tidy. Every time I visited there were 2-3 other people or families maintaining their loved one's plot.Jul 29, 2006
